Understanding Afrikaans Questions
In Afrikaans, forming questions is a bit different from English. We change the order of words in a sentence to ask a question.
Basic Rules for Forming Questions
Important Points
- Start with the verb or question word.
- Follow with the subject of the sentence.
- Add the rest of the sentence.
Afrikaans questions often start with a verb or a question word like 'wat' (what), 'waar' (where), 'wanneer' (when), 'hoe' (how), or 'hoekom' (why).
Examples
- Wat doen jy?
- Waar woon jy?
- Is jy gelukkig?
Sometimes, we use the word 'is' at the beginning to make questions, especially with 'yes' or 'no' answers.
Examples
- Is jy siek?
- Is dit jou boek?
- Is ons laat?
Important Points
- Wat - What
- Waar - Where
- Wanneer - When
- Hoe - How
- Hoekom - Why
These question words help us ask more specific questions. They usually come at the beginning of the sentence.
Examples
- Hoe gaan dit met jou?
- Wanneer kom jy?
- Hoekom is jy laat?
