Understanding Armenian Adjective Agreement
In Armenian, just like in English, adjectives are words that describe nouns. They tell us more about a person, place, or thing. But there's something special about adjectives in Armenian: they need to match the noun they describe in a special way. This is called 'agreement.'
Important Points
- Adjectives agree in gender: If the noun is masculine, the adjective should be masculine. If the noun is feminine, the adjective should be feminine.
- Adjectives agree in number: If the noun is singular, the adjective should be singular. If the noun is plural, the adjective should be plural.
- Adjectives usually come after the noun they describe in Armenian.
- Some adjectives have special endings that change depending on the noun's gender and number.
Let's look at some examples to see how adjectives change to match the nouns.
Examples
- Մեծ տղա (big boy) - Մեծ աղջիկ (big girl)
- Փոքր տուն (small house) - Փոքր տներ (small houses)
- Կարմիր վարդ (red rose) - Կարմիր վարդեր (red roses)
In these examples, notice how the adjective 'մեծ' (big) and 'փոքր' (small) stay the same, but they still agree with the noun they describe. The adjective 'կարմիր' (red) also stays the same, showing that not all adjectives change form visibly, but they still follow the rules of agreement.
