Understanding Adjective Agreement in Azerbaijani
In the Azerbaijani language, adjectives are words that describe nouns. Just like in English, adjectives in Azerbaijani help us tell what something is like, such as its color, size, or shape. But there is something special about adjectives in Azerbaijani: they must agree with the nouns they describe.
This means that unlike some languages, Azerbaijani adjectives do not change if the noun is singular or plural, or if the noun is masculine or feminine. The adjective stays the same!
Examples
- böyük ev (big house)
- böyük evlər (big houses)
- gözəl qız (beautiful girl)
As you can see in the examples, the adjective 'böyük' (big) stays the same whether it is describing one house or many houses. Similarly, 'gözəl' (beautiful) does not change when describing a girl.
Just like in English, adjectives in Azerbaijani usually come right before the noun. This helps us know what the adjective is describing.
Examples
- kiçik otaq (small room)
- şirin alma (sweet apple)
- uzun yol (long road)
Important Points
- Adjectives do not change for singular or plural nouns.
- Adjectives do not change for masculine or feminine nouns.
- Adjectives usually come before the noun.
Remembering these simple rules will help you use adjectives correctly in Azerbaijani. Practice by describing things around you, and soon it will become easy!
