Understanding Word Order in Azerbaijani Sentences
In Azerbaijani, the way we put words together in a sentence is very important. This is called word order. Knowing the right order helps us understand who is doing what in a sentence.
Important Points
  • Subject: The person or thing doing the action.
  • Object: The person or thing receiving the action.
  • Verb: The action word.
Let's break it down with an example. If you want to say 'The cat eats the fish', in Azerbaijani, you would say it in the order 'The cat the fish eats'.
Examples
  • Pişik balığı yeyir.
  • Uşaq kitabı oxuyur.
  • Qız mahnını oxuyur.
Sometimes, we can add more details to our sentences like when or where something happens. These are called adverbs or adverbial phrases.
Examples
  • Pişik səhər balığı yeyir.
  • Uşaq kitabxanada kitabı oxuyur.
  • Qız gözəl mahnını oxuyur.
Just like in English, we can also use adjectives to describe nouns. In Azerbaijani, adjectives come before the noun they describe.
Examples
  • Böyük pişik balığı yeyir.
  • Kiçik uşaq kitabı oxuyur.
  • Gözəl qız mahnını oxuyur.
