Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions are used to connect a main clause with a subordinate clause. The subordinate clause provides extra information and cannot stand alone. Some common subordinating conjunctions in Dutch are 'omdat' (because), 'terwijl' (while), 'als' (if), and 'hoewel' (although).
Examples
- Ik blijf thuis omdat het regent.
- Terwijl hij leest, drinkt hij thee.
- We gaan wandelen als het mooi weer is.
Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to connect similar parts of a sentence. In Dutch, examples include 'zowel...als' (both...and), 'niet alleen...maar ook' (not only...but also).

- Zowel kinderen als volwassenen houden van ijs.
- Hij is niet alleen slim maar ook grappig.
