Understanding Magyar Participles
Participles in the Hungarian language are special forms of verbs that can be used to describe actions or states in a different way. They help us to express ideas more clearly and can be used to form adjectives, nouns, or even adverbs.
Types of Participles
Important Points
  • Present Participle
  • Past Participle
  • Future Participle
Present Participle
The present participle describes an action that is currently happening. In Hungarian, it is often formed by adding '-ó' or '-ő' to the verb stem.
Examples
  • olvasó gyerek (the reading child)
  • játszó kutya (the playing dog)
  • futó ember (the running man)
Past Participle
The past participle is used to describe an action that has already happened. It is formed by adding '-t' or '-tt' to the verb stem.
Examples
  • olvasott könyv (the read book)
  • játszott játék (the played game)
  • futott verseny (the run race)
Future Participle
The future participle describes an action that will happen. It is less common and often formed with '-andó' or '-endő'.
Examples
  • olvasandó levél (the letter to be read)
  • játszandó zene (the music to be played)
  • futandó táv (the distance to be run)
