Understanding Korean Superlatives and Comparisons
In Korean, superlatives and comparisons help us talk about how things are different or similar in size, quality, or amount. Let's learn how to use them!
Basic Concepts of Comparisons
Important Points
- Comparisons are used to show how two things are different.
- We use words like 'more' and 'less' to compare things.
- In Korean, '더' (deo) means 'more' and '덜' (deol) means 'less'.
When you want to say something is more than something else, you use '더'. For example, if you want to say 'bigger', you say '더 크다' (deo keuda).
Examples
- 이 사과는 저 사과보다 더 크다.
- 이 고양이는 저 강아지보다 더 귀엽다.
Superlatives are used to show that something is the most or least of something. In Korean, we use '가장' (gajang) or '제일' (jeil) to say 'the most'. These words are placed before the adjective.
Examples
- 이 산이 가장 높다.
- 이 영화가 제일 재미있다.
To say things are similar, we use '같다' (gatda) which means 'same' or 'like'. You can compare two things by using '처럼' (cheoreom) or '같이' (gati) which means 'like'.
Examples
- 그녀는 천사처럼 예쁘다.
- 이 집은 성처럼 크다.
