Understanding Latviešu Conjunctions
Conjunctions are special words that help us connect other words, phrases, or sentences together. They are like little bridges that make our sentences flow smoothly.
Types of Latviešu Conjunctions
Important Points
- Coordinating Conjunctions
- Subordinating Conjunctions
- Correlative Conjunctions
Let's explore each type of conjunction and see how they work in sentences.
Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions are used to join words or groups of words that are similar or equal. In Latvian, some common coordinating conjunctions are 'un' (and), 'vai' (or), and 'bet' (but).
Examples
- Es ēdu ābolu un banānu.
- Vai tu gribi tēju vai kafiju?
- Viņš ir gudrs, bet slinks.
Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions connect a dependent clause to an independent clause. They help to show a relationship between the two parts of the sentence. Some common subordinating conjunctions in Latvian are 'ka' (that), 'kad' (when), and 'ja' (if).
Examples
- Es zinu, ka tu esi šeit.
- Mēs sāksim, kad visi būs gatavi.
- Es nākšu, ja būs laiks.
Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to join equal elements in a sentence. In Latvian, some examples are 'gan...gan' (both...and), 'ne...ne' (neither...nor).
Examples
- Gan māsa, gan brālis ir mājās.
- Ne es, ne tu to nezinām.
