Understanding Negation in Latvian
Negation is a way to say 'no' or 'not' in a sentence. In Latvian, we use special words to change the meaning of a sentence from positive to negative.
We use 'ne' before verbs to make them negative. This is similar to how we use 'not' in English.
Examples
- Es neēdu ābolu. (I am not eating an apple.)
- Viņš neiet uz skolu. (He is not going to school.)
- Mēs nerunājam latviski. (We do not speak Latvian.)
Important Points
- Use 'ne' before the verb to negate it.
- In Latvian, 'ne' is placed directly before the verb.
- Sometimes, other words like 'nekas' (nothing), 'neviens' (no one), and 'nekad' (never) are used for negation.
These words help us say things like 'nothing', 'no one', and 'never'. They also make sentences negative.
Examples
- Es neredzu nekas. (I see nothing.)
- Viņa nezina nevienu. (She knows no one.)
- Mēs neejam nekad tur. (We never go there.)
