Understanding the Present Tense in Latviešu
The present tense in Latviešu is used to talk about things that are happening right now or things that happen regularly. Just like in English, we use this tense to describe actions that are currently taking place or that are true in the present time.
How to Form the Present Tense
In Latviešu, verbs change their endings to show that they are in the present tense. This is called conjugation. The way the verb changes depends on who is doing the action, like 'I', 'you', 'he', 'she', 'we', or 'they'.
Important Points
  • For 'I' (es), verbs often end with -u.
  • For 'you' (tu), verbs often end with -i.
  • For 'he/she/it' (viņš/viņa/tas), verbs often end with -a or -e.
  • For 'we' (mēs), verbs often end with -am or -em.
  • For 'you all' (jūs), verbs often end with -at or -et.
  • For 'they' (viņi/viņas), verbs often end with -a or -e.
Using the Present Tense
We use the present tense to talk about actions that are happening right now, like 'I am eating' or 'She is playing'. It's also used for things that happen regularly or are always true, like 'The sun rises in the east'.
Examples
  • Es ēdu ābolu.
  • Viņš spēlē futbolu.
