Understanding Norsk Adjective Agreement
In Norwegian, adjectives are words that describe nouns. Just like in English, they tell us more about a person, place, or thing. But in Norwegian, adjectives change their form to match the noun they are describing. This is called adjective agreement.
Nouns in Norwegian can be masculine, feminine, or neuter. Adjectives change depending on the gender of the noun.
Examples
- En stor bil (A big car - masculine)
- Ei stor bok (A big book - feminine)
- Et stort hus (A big house - neuter)
Adjectives also change depending on whether the noun is singular or plural.
Examples
- En grønn stol (A green chair - singular)
- To grønne stoler (Two green chairs - plural)
When the noun is definite, meaning it refers to something specific, the adjective changes form.
Examples
- Den store bilen (The big car - definite)
- Det store huset (The big house - definite)
Important Points
- Adjectives must match the gender of the noun (masculine, feminine, neuter).
- Adjectives must match the number of the noun (singular or plural).
- Adjectives must match the definiteness of the noun (definite or indefinite).
