Understanding Comparative and Superlative Forms in Română
In the Română language, adjectives can change to show comparison. This means we can say if something is more than or the most of something else. There are two main ways to compare: Comparative and Superlative.
Comparative Forms
When we want to say that something is more of a certain quality than another, we use the comparative form. In Română, we often use 'mai' before the adjective to show this.
Examples
  • Ana este mai înaltă decât Maria.
  • Acest măr este mai dulce decât celălalt.
  • El este mai rapid decât fratele său.
Superlative Forms
When we want to say something is the most or the least of a quality, we use the superlative form. In Română, we use 'cel mai' for the most, and 'cel mai puțin' for the least before the adjective.
Examples
  • Ana este cea mai înaltă din clasă.
  • Acesta este cel mai frumos câine.
  • Acest film este cel mai puțin interesant.
Special Cases
Important Points
  • Some adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative forms.
  • For example, 'bun' (good) becomes 'mai bun' (better) and 'cel mai bun' (the best).
  • Similarly, 'rău' (bad) becomes 'mai rău' (worse) and 'cel mai rău' (the worst).
Examples
  • Acesta este un mai bun prieten decât celălalt.
  • Acesta este cel mai bun prieten al meu.
  • Acesta este un rezultat mai rău decât mă așteptam.
