Understanding Slovenčina Comparative Adjectives
In Slovenčina, just like in English, we use comparative adjectives to show how two things are different. We use them to say if something is bigger, smaller, faster, or slower than something else.
Forming Comparative Adjectives
Important Points
- Most adjectives add '-ší' or '-ejší' to form the comparative.
- If the adjective ends in '-ký' or '-hý', it changes to '-ší'.
- Some adjectives have irregular forms that you need to memorize.
Examples
- rýchly - rýchlejší (fast - faster)
- pekný - krajší (pretty - prettier)
- dobrý - lepší (good - better)
Using Comparative Adjectives
When we use comparative adjectives, we often use the word 'than' to show what we are comparing. In Slovenčina, we use the word 'ako' for 'than'.
Examples
- Tento dom je väčší ako tamten dom. (This house is bigger than that house.)
- Môj pes je rýchlejší ako tvoj pes. (My dog is faster than your dog.)
- Táto kniha je zaujímavejšia ako tá druhá. (This book is more interesting than the other one.)
Irregular Comparative Adjectives
Some adjectives are irregular, which means they don't follow the normal rules. You just have to learn these special words.
Examples
- dobrý - lepší (good - better)
- zlý - horší (bad - worse)
- veľký - väčší (big - bigger)
