Understanding Comparative Adjectives in Español
Comparative adjectives are words we use to compare two things. In English, we might say 'bigger' or 'smaller'. In Español, we have special words and ways to do this too.
Basic Rules for Forming Comparatives
Important Points
  • To say something is more of a quality, use 'más' before the adjective.
  • To say something is less of a quality, use 'menos' before the adjective.
  • Always add 'que' after the adjective to compare two things.
Examples
  • Ella es más alta que su hermano.
  • Este libro es menos interesante que aquel.
  • Mi perro es más grande que tu gato.
Irregular Comparatives
Some adjectives change completely when we compare them, just like in English where 'good' becomes 'better'. In Español, there are a few adjectives that do this.
Important Points
  • 'bueno' becomes 'mejor'
  • 'malo' becomes 'peor'
  • 'grande' becomes 'mayor' when talking about age
  • 'pequeño' becomes 'menor' when talking about age
Examples
  • Este pastel es mejor que el otro.
  • Su nota es peor que la mía.
  • Ella es mayor que su hermana.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to get good at using comparative adjectives is to practice. Try comparing things around you, like toys, food, or even animals!
