Understanding Українська Possessive Pronouns
Possessive pronouns in Ukrainian tell us who owns something. Just like in English, where we use words like 'my' or 'your', Ukrainian has its own special words to show possession.
Important Points
- мій, моя, моє, мої - my
- твій, твоя, твоє, твої - your (singular)
- його - his
- її - her
- наш, наша, наше, наші - our
- ваш, ваша, ваше, ваші - your (plural or formal)
- їхній, їхня, їхнє, їхні - their
These pronouns change based on the gender and number of the noun they are describing. In Ukrainian, nouns can be masculine, feminine, or neuter, and they can also be singular or plural.
Examples
- Це мій собака. (This is my dog.)
- Це твоя книга. (This is your book.)
- Це її м'яч. (This is her ball.)
Let's break it down a bit more. 'мій' is used for masculine nouns like 'собака' (dog), 'моя' for feminine nouns like 'книга' (book), and 'моє' for neuter nouns. When talking about more than one thing, we use 'мої'.
Examples
- Це моє вікно. (This is my window.)
- Це наші друзі. (These are our friends.)
- Це їхній будинок. (This is their house.)
It's important to practice these pronouns with different nouns to get used to matching them correctly. Try using them in sentences with your favorite things or people you know.
