Understanding Noun Pluralization in Tiếng Việt
In Tiếng Việt, making nouns plural is a bit different from English. Instead of changing the word itself, we usually add words around it to show that there is more than one.
Important Points
  • 'Những' is used for plural nouns when you want to emphasize the quantity or when the group is not specific.
  • 'Các' is used for plural nouns when referring to a specific group of things or people.
  • Sometimes, context alone can show that a noun is plural without using 'những' or 'các'.
It's important to know that Tiếng Việt doesn't change the noun itself to make it plural. Instead, we use these little words to help us know when there is more than one of something.
Examples
  • Những con mèo đang chơi trong vườn.
  • Các học sinh đang học bài.
  • Tôi thấy nhiều cái ghế trong phòng.
In some cases, you might not need 'những' or 'các' if the context is clear that you're talking about more than one thing. For example, when you say 'Tôi thấy nhiều cái ghế trong phòng', 'nhiều' means 'many', so we know there are many chairs without needing 'những' or 'các'.
