Understanding Subject-Verb Agreement in Tiếng Việt
In Tiếng Việt, making sentences is a bit different from English. We need to make sure that the subject and the verb in a sentence go well together. This is called subject-verb agreement.
Important Points
  • In Tiếng Việt, subjects can be a noun or a pronoun.
  • Verbs do not change form based on the subject.
  • The order of words is usually Subject-Verb-Object, just like in English.
  • There are no verb conjugations like in English, so verbs stay the same.
  • Context and time are often shown with additional words, not by changing the verb.
Let's look at some examples to see how subjects and verbs work together in Tiếng Việt.
Examples
  • Con mèo ăn cá.
  • Chúng tôi đi học.
  • Bạn chơi bóng.
In these examples, 'con mèo', 'chúng tôi', and 'bạn' are the subjects. The verbs 'ăn', 'đi', and 'chơi' do not change even though the subjects are different.
Sometimes, we add words to show when something happens or how many people are doing something, but the verb itself stays the same.
Examples
  • Con chó đã chạy.
  • Các em bé đang ngủ.
  • Anh ấy sẽ học.
In these sentences, 'đã', 'đang', and 'sẽ' are used to show time, but the verbs 'chạy', 'ngủ', and 'học' do not change.
